Luring llamas

Sent from my iPhone. There were llamas in this field, but try as we might, we couldn't lure
them over to us.

Ok, so maybe it was an EASY run this morning...

Rok walls

Sent from my iPhone. These dry rock walls run for miles around the fields.

Starting a great morning's run

Sent from my iPhone. Apparently, this is an atypical Kansas July, but it is unbelievably
beautiful here! This morning, it was probably about 74 degrees or so,
breezy, and the air was so clear you could see 50 miles all around
you. Made for a great morning run.

Kansas

Sent from my iPhone. This week, we're with Steve's family in Missouri and Kansas. This is
at his sister, Mike's place, and it's the Buick in which her husband
learned to drive. Incidentally, he bought the car for 75 bucks.
There's inflation for you.

In my mind I'm going to Carolina

Sent from my iPhone. In this case, North Carolina. My cousin had a baby shower in Abingdon,
VA last weekend. The closest I could get was Charlotte NC and rent a
car. Not bad at all, considering how pretty the mountains are through
that part of the country.

It finally came!! We now officially have big bright green mowing
machine. And it's electric. No more bloody hands from trying to yank
start the stupid Frankenstein rental mower

Mom, here's the little maidenhair transplant

Sent from my iPhone. Two weeks and it's still surviving in it's new home! Think it might be
time to start transitioning our gazeebo into a ferny, lush retreat.

Perfecting the magic

Sent from my iPhone. I still love the fact tha you can take icky, gooey old bananas that
look bound for the compost heap, add a little flour and eggs, and like
magic, banana bread appears. This morning, I actually remembered to
add the salt to the mix, let's see how this one tastes. Think it's a
combo of sweating 16 hours a day and the increase in running, but I'm
craving bananas like no ones business!

Hatillo Beach

On the way home from Camuy, we decided to stop off at the beach in a little town called Hatillo. This has got to be one of the prettiest, cleanest, most attractive beaches we've seen. All the houses and the squares on the beach were so neat and tidy that they sparkeled in the sun!

goofing around in the park

I loved this old train - really neat with the stormy afternoon sky behind it. And of course, my monkey on the monkey bars, and the pilot, learning to fly :-)

More Camuy

The first two were taken from the sinkhole, looking back into the cave. You can really see the holes forming there in the rock. In the second picture, you can kind of get a feel for the sinkhole - it was probably about 60-70 feet above our heads, and about 60 feet still below us.

More Camuy Caverns

The first picture is looking out the entrance to the cavern, around the corner of the largest stalagmite on the island. The next picture is looking out one of the rear mouths of the cavern into a huge sinkhole that divides the caverns. (I was trying to get a picture when a drip made the water ripple, but never got the shot) The third and fourth pictures are the waterfall inside the big sinkhole, after you walk through the rear mouth. The water was clean enough that you could fill your water bottles with it.

Sunday's Escapade to Camuy

Very close to Arecibo is another town which takes advantage of the karst sinkholes; that town is Camuy and home of the Cavernos Camuy. We took the commercial tour, which was a VERY easy hour or so. They take you down to the mouth of the cave on a little trolley, then you spend the next hour or so walking through the biggest mouths of the cavern. It was absolutely beautiful! Steve and I both agreed that Carlsbad Caverns are the the only caves we've seen that even come close to being this pretty. Highlights include standing on ledge in a small chamber, high over the river Camuy thundering below, watching the bats swoop within feet of your face, and standing under a crystal clear waterfall tumbling down mossy rocks in a sunlit opening. Lowlights include jumping spiders. Seriously. The damned things jump. And they're big.
