Cliff road
Sent from my iPhone. It's hard to see in this picture, but Desecheo Island is off in the
far distance. This is what you see as soon as you come out of the
little trail from our house. The cliff and ocean is just off to the
right. Well. And in front too :-). One of the nice things they've done
with this base is that they've made huge grassy public areas next to
the cliff. So- even though the people who rank a house on this road
get one rockin view, everyone can enjoy the coast as well. It's
wonderfully wide open and green. Acres and acres of green grass to run
through and watch the coastline.
The touch-me-not grass
Sent from my iPhone. I never get sick of playing with this stuff. If you touch one of the
open leaves, in about one second, it closes up tight (all of the
purplish lines in this picture are closed because I was messing with
it whole I was on the phone with mom).

What Steve did with his own two hands. And foot.
Sent from my iPhone. Mom brought up the very good point that I posted pictures of Steve
monkey-toeing his way through a project, but I never showed the fruits
of his labor... Ta-da! I now have a lovely pot rack!! And that is no
small feat, given the fact that our walls are 8-10" of solid concrete!
Look Ma! I'm domestic!
Sent from my iPhone. So, my first stab at baking bread was a success! Rosemary foccacia,
and it's pretty tasty!

Memorial Day
Memorial Day
These pictures are all from Borinquen Beach, which is just a quick bike ride from the house. I think it's one of the prettier beaches here, and it's got a lot of everything you want: sandy beaches, reef to snorkel, lots of rocks (aka skin-removers) to climb on, and beach glass if you want to go beach combing.
For some reason, my camera's overexposing everything; it must sense I'm researching new underwater cameras.
If you swim out around this point, you can find a lot of old aircraft engines in the water that were chucked off the cliff years and years ago
If these rocks look soft and cuddly, then they're liars!!
I was quite smitten by this "turtle rock" - he looks like he's so surprised!

Our beach
Doesn't this look like a skull? The cool thing is, after you crawl
through the eye, it opens up onto a big cavern

Our beach
These are cuts in the sand from the recent rains... Pretty impressive,
given that we haven't even really seen the big rain yet...

Our cliff and beach
Sent from my iPhone. From our house, you go to the end of the street, through the nature
trail, and that puts you on the cliff overlooking the ocean. From
there, you go through the gate, and the Indiana jones theme song
starts playing softly in the distance, getting louder and louder as
you descend the cliff face to the beach...
This is a tree just on the other side of the gate. The arrow is
pointing to a milipede - he's about 6 inches long. And yes, he had
buddies.
The rest of the pictures tonight are from the cliff hike and our beach.

First haircut!
Since this is the first time in memorable history that Steve hasn't
had a short hair requirement, he decided he was going to grow it out
and see what he looked like as a surfer dude. That lasted almost 4
months, which was just enough time for us to realize that his hair has
a surprising amount of wave to it. It was also enough time for him to
fully understand why women complain about humidity. So... It was off
to the barbershop this morning. As luck would have it, not a single
person in there spoke English, and we hadn't gotten to the "haircut"
chapter of Rosetta Stone. So his barber whipped out his cell phone and
dialed one of his bilingual buddies, handed the phone to Steve and the
translations began. After 3 minutes of handoffs, the cell phone
snapped shut and the shears came out, which mildly terrified me, but
the results were pretty darned good! It was honestly the loudest, and
funniest barbershop experience we've ever had, and we all left totally
tickled. The best part? Their display case was full of shiny spinner
rims for cars, and more hair gel than I've ever seen on my life. What
a combo. The gel came in two sizes: .5 liter and (I swear on my life)
1 liter. "good god sally, how much product DO you use?"

Trying to reason with hurricane season
Sent from my iPhone. This has cracked me up since day one. You pick a small island, where
hurricanes and winds are a normal part of life, and then you give
people TRAILERS to work in. In general, seems like a horrid idea. Good
way to end up in Oz. But, never fear... We'll just get more cables to
wrap it up...

I'm the coconut man, stop me when I'm passing by...
Sent from my iPhone. I just finished moving my car at the request of facilities management,
because the "coconut man" is coming by with the ladder truck to knock
down all our coconuts, before they knock us down! Huh. I can honestly
say that's the first time I've ever heard THAT request. But this is
great - I've been wondering how I was going to shimmy up and get them
anyways... And Luis' favorite drink is scotch and coconut water....
I'm thinking it may be a hoot of a weekend! :-)

If you can't beat em, join em
Sent from my iPhone. Which is exactly why this little guy is sitting here watching a movie
with me.
What the heck. Nature's finest insect repellant...
"Well those are some sad little guys, aren't they?"
Sent from my iPhone. Ok. Seriously. I don't know what my problem is, but I can't cook an
egg to save my life. This morning, all I wanted to do was fix 3 fried
eggs. Instead, what I got was a mess of eggs that stuck so tightly to
the bottom of the skillet that I couldn't flip them, so I went for
"sunny side up". by the time I finally got them out of the pan, the
yolks literally fell off the whites and bounced across the plate. That
was about the time Steve walked in the kitchen and sweetly called them
some sad little guys. God love him, he ate them anyways. And, my
"nonstick calphalon" skillet is STILL soaking - even after 2 attempted
scrubbings with barkerps friend. Quick release, my butt.
