Puerto Hermina
After playing and exploring the old railroad, we decided to go off looking for the Pirate's Cove Hideaway. Gustavo had told Steve it was nearby, and it sounded really cool! According to articles I found, " This port battered by the sea on one side and hidden from land by cliffs was long known to be a hiding place for the Caribbean pirates, who made use of the area's solitude and unapproachability by land." Unfortunately, there are no signs for the stronghold, and the only directions we had were typical Puerto Rican: "near Camino de la Cruz and Pozo del Mago" Um. Thanks. I've got no clue where either are.
So, using Steve's downright uncanny sense of direction, we started driving until we wound our way down to a little beach and park area. We were thrilled to find some cops at the park, so we could have someone who we could ask directions. They told us they didn't know what we were talking about, or that maybe it was down toward Arecibo. They then apologized, saying they weren't from the area (though both were in uniform, bulletproof vests, and driving a govt vehicle). We decided to get out and walk on the beach anyways, because it looked pretty and the cliffs were impressive. We weren't 100 paces away from where they were parked, when we walked right up to the Pirate's Hideaway. So, the second picture is of Steve saying "what the hell?! how could they not know this was here?!"
The hideaway really was cool - I don't know when it was built originally, but it really was in a pretty good spot. It's been somewhat restored, but the original coral walls are still intact. Wish we could get the walls to talk...
