Small tragedy - and a biology lesson

Unfortunately, one of the beautiful shells steve and I picked up
yesterday still had an inhabitant. We ALWAYS look in each one before
we take it home to make sure no hermit crabs are living inside, but
apparently, this guy had just moved into a new, much bigger shell, and
was able to hide completely inside. By the time we discovered him, he
had already crawled most of the way out of the shell and wasn't moving
any more. I really hate that we killed the little fellow, but I had
always been curious as to how in the world they could hang on to their
shell so tenaciously... When we pulled him out, it quickly became
obvious! Check out that tail!! So, the poor little guy did not die in
vain; I got a great biology lesson, and hopefully he's now sleeping
peacefully in my flowerbed, next to crabby stool. Very fitting.
