Another shot from Zabrieske Point

The cool thing about hiking Death Valley in the winter is that you can just look a little up and over and find snow-capped mountains (that's what Steve's pointing to). Well, and the fact that it's not 136 degrees (no kidding) makes it pretty nice to hike in the winter too.

Next set of pictures are from the outdoor museum at the Visitors Center. We took about a million pictures here and spent a LOT of time -just a lot of really great old machinery that's still in amazinly great condition. As a sucker for old machinery and anything that has gears, we were both in our 7th heaven.

Hiking Death Vally

It has been a glorious weekend! Seventy degrees by the afternoon, and mild mornings and evenings. Steve and I took our first hike (and first visit) in Death Valley on Saturday, and had a really really great time. Here's a few pics from Zabrieske Point. Talk about feeling like you're in the middle of nowhere

Old Year's Resolutions

I think that mid-February is a little too late to qualify for "new year's resolutions" but it is definitely time to try to revive this blog now that we're a little more settled and back on the mainland.

I'm just now starting to download and look through some of the hundreds of pictures we took during our last month in Puerto Rico, so there's a pretty good chance that I'm going to go back in time and post some of the best ones to this blog... eventually. But for now, let's get current with some pics from yesterday.

When we first checked into our temporary housing, I was a little bummed because this room didn't look out on the strip like last time. But, the view out our window is really starting to grow on me. Not only do we have a spectacular view of the mountains, but watching the sun rise every morning is pretty great. Especially since, as far as my body is still concerned, it's rising at 10:00 am! Sweet! The first few mornings, I had a strangely disoriented feeling as I watched the world lighten up, and it took a couple of days to figure out why. Even though we're facing due East, I was watching the western side of the buildings in front of us start to light up and twinkle with orange light. If the physics classes didn't take, then years of art classes definitely taught me that this is an impossibility! Except of course, in Vegas. The high rise towers in front of us reflect the sun beams perfectly on the western face of the shorter buildings, making it look like the sun is rising in the east and the west. See? Time really can stand still :-)

The other cool thing about our view is that it looks directly out on the airport. Fun to watch Steve take off in the mornings. This is Justin and Steve, climbing out directly overhead.

It ain't a bad gig.

Only in puerto Rico...

Ok. We actually have a LOT of those stories, but here's just one...

In case you're wondering, yes, those ladders really are just propped
on the power lines they're replacing. When we came down this same road
earlier this morning, the same crew was holding the line up across the
road with 2 2x4s nailed together end-to-end. Steve wanted to go back
and get a picture of it, but I put up a squawk, since it meant we'd
have to drive under it two more times. I see no need to tempt fate,
even if they do.

New Year's Eve, Party II

How many Ricans does it take to figure out how to open the fence to Jimmy's yard?

This is about 1:45 am, and we're all laughing because Savannah, who had been sooooo sleepy before, just disappeared. Come to find out, the "sleepies" disappeared instantly when we left the "boring" party and got out of the car to go to the one with other kids! While we were getting our stuff together, she jumped the fence and left us in the dust!

Happy New Year!!

Happy 2011 everyone! It's been a long time since our last post; several months on the road, impending move, and a computer virus all add up to not much time in the way of taking care of this blog. I hope to catch up a little here and there, but lest I don't, I wanted to share some of our New Year's celebrations.

This is our first party of New Year's Eve, at Danny's house somewhere around 11:30, watching Arlene's Mom and sisters work the twist. It's worth watching all the way to the end, just to see how tickled their grandson gets watching the fun!

It was the start of such an amazing night - such good people. I dont' know if my stomach hurt more from waaaaaaayyyy too much food, or from laughing so hard. Either way - it was happy!

Hoover Dam

The day after Red Rock, we decided to go to Hoover Dam. Even though Carlito said he couldn't sleep at all the night before because his legs hurt too bad ;-) he decided to come with us again anyways.

It was just as neat as I remembered

Bonnie Springs

After playing in the canyon, we were all famished, so we decided to hit nearby Bonnie Springs. It's a little ghost town, come tourist attraction, that turned out to be cute as could be in its cheesy fun. We ate at their little restaurant, then went through a petting zoo, where I had my shoelaces untied time and time again by a cute, soft little muzzle.

On the way out we finally found what Steve had been looking for all day - the wild burrows that roam the canyon. Here's a few of them coming up to say hi
